10 Healthy Things to Do in Baltimore


Visiting Baltimore? Or perhaps you live there but are looking for a new place to get outdoors or take a walk. Check out the following options for healthy ways to enjoy Baltimore, whether it’s biking, running or just taking in the sights on a scenic stroll.

  1. Inner Harbor of Baltimore – The Inner Harbor offers many attractions like the National Aquarium, The Maryland Science Center, The American Visionary Art Museum and more. This area of Baltimore features a 7-mile brick waterfront promenade that connects all the hot spots. Find this trail, get your heart rate up and see the sights at the same time.

  2. The National Aquarium – Not exactly a health center, but any museum or aquarium does give you the opportunity to walk and get in your steps for the day. This aquarium is known for its architecture and plentiful exhibits.

  3. Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail – The 560-mile long land and water route tells the stories of the War of 1812 and the Civil War. It connects historic regions in Maryland, Virginia, and parts of the District of Columbia. In Baltimore it highlights events that surrounded the Battle for Baltimore, which inspired the Star Spangled Banner. Congress established this historic trail in 2008. This trail weaves throughout downtown Baltimore and the Inner Harbor.

  4. Cylburn Arboretum – The arboretum began as the estate of a private businessman, Jesse Tyson, in Baltimore. In 1982 the estate was renamed the Cylburn Arboretum Association. This city park has 207 acres of trees, shrubs, flowers, and more. With plenty of room to walk and enjoy the outdoors, this park is a perfect place to stretch one's legs.

  5. Gwynns Falls Trail – This is a 15-mile urban greenway park in Baltimore City along the Gwynns Falls stream valley. The trail system was designed for hiking and biking; it begins in Leakin Park and heads to the Inner Harbor. It’s comprised of 2,000 acres of publicly owned parkland and is the perfect place to go on a walk or bike ride.

  6. Patterson Park – Patterson Park is another great expanse of green in Baltimore. This park features a fenced-in dog park, sports fields, paths for biking and jogging, playgrounds, and a pool.

  7. Druid Hill Park – This is another 745-acre urban park in Baltimore. It was once the country estate of Dr. George Buchanan who was one of the seven commissioners that established Baltimore City in 1729. Some claim that this park ranks with Central Park in New York City.

  8. Carroll Park Bike and Skate Park – If skating is your thing, Baltimore offers a full skate parks, this park connects to the Gwynns Falls system.

  9. BWI Airport – BWI offers two different walking paths through their airport terminals. Each path is a loop that takes around 20 minutes to complete and is approximately 1-kilometer long. Both loops are designated American Heart Association Walking Paths. The airport also features a bike path located outside of the airport. The trail is 12.5 miles long.

  10. ROAM Fitness – In November, new traveler-friendly gym ROAM Fitness will open in the D/E Connector of BWI Airport. ROAM Fitness will offer cardio equipment, free weights, showers, and more for those headed out on a trip, on a long layover in the airport, or arriving in Baltimore.
